Students will create stories and plays that present real or imagined challenges, drawing readers into narratives rich with tension and resolution. Additionally, the course introduces poetry and essay writing to broaden students’ creative expression and versatility as writers.
This primer in creative writing immerses students in the artistry and techniques of crafting fiction and non-fiction. The curriculum provides a close study of the craft of short stories, novellas, and an introduction to writing for the stage. Students will explore the foundational forces that shape compelling narratives, including character development, societal frameworks, and world-building.
Through hands-on learning and analysis, students will gain the skills to construct and critique characters, societies, and fictional worlds with depth and significance. By applying these elements, students will produce collections of short stories, extended works, and novellas. Additionally, students will engage with regional and national writing competitions to showcase their creativity and refine their craft.
In this course students learn about the stylistic significance of writing; as it pertains to poetry, informative texts, and marketing copy. Students will learn about specific poetic forms, movements in poetry, and crafting techniques. Additionally, students will develop and understanding of how writing is not only an art form but also a career pathway. Students will create anthologies, writers’ portfolios, PSAs for local non-profits, marketing packets and grant applications, and will complete an introductory short film project.
This comprehensive course explores the dynamic relationship between actor, playwright, and script, providing students with a deep understanding of major theatre genres and their historical influences. Through the analysis and breakdown of scripts, students will learn to identify objectives, obstacles, tactics, and character development essential to creating impactful narratives.
The curriculum emphasizes mastery of fundamental script structures, including Dramatic Structures, Structural Tools, and historical frameworks such as the Neoclassical Rules and the Well-Made Play. Students will apply this knowledge to create both short and long plays, develop marketing copy, and design storyboards, preparing them for diverse creative and professional opportunities in theatre and beyond.
This course provides an in-depth exploration of symbolism and its critical role in supporting larger narratives across diverse texts. Students will study the craft of extended novel-writing, Socratic philosophy, and contemporary literary theories to develop a nuanced understanding of literature and creative expression.
The purpose of this course is to empower students to create works that reflect their individual talents and aspirations, guiding them along a career path in writing and literature. Through the completion and presentation of final portfolios, students will gain opportunities to earn collegiate scholarships and advance their academic and professional ambitions.
This two-year course equips students with the versatile skills required to succeed in the creative writing industry. Emphasizing the significance of cross-genre standards in both non-fiction and fictional works, students will engage in revisionary processes, text-based projects, and the development of a comprehensive Writer’s Portfolio by the end of the course.
Throughout this track, students will undertake a variety of creative and analytical projects, including introductory novels, genre-specific writing, literary analyses of modern works, articles, reflective and personal essays, and literary contest or magazine submission logs. Additionally, students will gain practical experience by serving as staff members for the school newspaper and two departmental literary magazines. This hands-on approach fosters creativity, professionalism, and a strong foundation for future endeavors in writing and publication.
