At Hill Country Arts, we are committed to fostering the creativity and imagination of our youngest learners. Our Interdisciplinary Arts Program for Kindergartners and First Graders introduces students to the world of visual arts, music, dance, and drama in a fun and engaging way. This program is designed to cultivate a love for the arts while developing essential skills such as creativity, collaboration, and self-expression.

Program Overview

  1. Visual Arts:
    • Activities: Students will explore various art materials and techniques, including drawing, painting, and sculpting. They will learn about colors, shapes, and textures while creating their own masterpieces.
    • Skills Developed: Fine motor skills, visual-spatial awareness, and creativity.

  1. Music:
    • Activities: Through singing, playing instruments, and listening to different genres of music, students will develop an appreciation for rhythm, melody, and harmony. They will also learn basic musical concepts such as tempo and dynamics.
    • Skills Developed: Auditory discrimination, rhythm, and teamwork.

  1. Dance:
    • Activities: Students will engage in creative movement and dance activities that encourage physical expression and coordination. They will explore different styles of dance and learn to move to various types of music.
    • Skills Developed: Gross motor skills, balance, and body awareness.

  1. Drama:
    • Activities: Through role-playing, storytelling, and improvisation, students will explore the world of drama. They will learn to express themselves through voice, facial expressions, and body language.
    • Skills Developed: Communication, empathy, and confidence.

At Hill Country Arts, we are dedicated to nurturing the artistic talents of our young students. Our Preparatory Arts Courses for second graders are designed to provide a solid foundation in visual arts, creative writing, dance, music, and drama. These courses aim to develop students' skills, creativity, and passion for the arts, preparing them for more advanced studies in their chosen fields.

Program Overview

  1. Visual Arts:
    • Activities: Students will explore various art techniques, including drawing, painting, and sculpting. They will learn about different art styles and famous artists, and create their own artworks inspired by these lessons.
    • Skills Developed: Fine motor skills, visual-spatial awareness, and creativity.

  1. Creative Writing:
    • Activities: Through storytelling, poetry, and journaling, students will develop their writing skills. They will learn about narrative structure, character development, and descriptive language.
    • Skills Developed: Writing, imagination, and communication.

  1. Dance:
    • Activities: Students will engage in various dance styles, including ballet, jazz, and tap. They will learn basic dance techniques, choreography, and the importance of rhythm and movement.
    • Skills Developed: Gross motor skills, coordination, and self-expression.


  1. Drama:
    • Activities: Through role-playing, improvisation, and script reading, students will explore the world of drama. They will learn to express themselves through voice, facial expressions, and body language.
    • Skills Developed: Communication, empathy, and confidence.

Program Structure

  • Pre-Major Declaration: Second graders will declare a pre-major in one of the arts disciplines. They will dedicate half the amount of time to their pre-major as third graders and up.
  • Dual Pre-Majors: Students with high academic performance may choose to declare up to two pre-majors, allowing them to explore multiple areas of interest.
